Chapter Eight

Dorian knew if he had any hope of having a relationship with Artie, he needed to tell the man the truth about who and what he was. Top secret be damned. “My name is Dorian Michael James. When I was eighteen, I joined the military, proudly serving my country in hot spots around the world. When I put in my papers several years later, I decided that I wasn’t done serving my country. I wanted to take what I had learned in the military and put it to use here at home.”

He kept eye contact with Artie as he drew in a deep breath and confessed, “I’m an undercover agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. For the last couple of years, I’ve been working on a joint task force with the ATF to stop a domestic gun running operation that goes from the Canadian border all the way down to Mexico.”

Artie blinked up at him. “I thought you were a biker.”

“I am.” Dorian winced at the confused frown on Artie’s face. “The night we met, I was on a gun buy. We believe that Jazz is one of the enforcer’s for the Ramirez Cartel. They’re involved in everything from drug running to human trafficking. We’ve been after them for a long time but no one seems to be able to get entrenched in their organization. They always seem to be able to root out anyone that goes undercover.”

“Have you gotten in with them?” Artie asked.

“Not exactly. My cover is the president of the Dirty Dozen Motorcycle Club. On the surface, we’re an outlaw biker gang that deals in just about anything that makes a buck. The night we met, I was supposed to make a gun buy from Jazz so that I could establish the Dirty Dozen with the cartel.”

Artie ducked his head, his voice low when he spoke. “I guess I kind of messed that up.”

“Not really.” He had, but not in the way Artie thought. “I used the situation as an excuse to demand face time with Jazz’s boss. After shooting it out with Jazz, I didn’t get my meeting but the shootout itself helped establish my motorcycle club as a dangerous entity in the eyes of the cartel”—Dorian grinned mischievously—“and a bad reputation is always a good thing in my line of work.”

Dorian grew somber as he watched Artie take all of this in. For someone not in his line of work, it was hard to understand all the ins and outs of what he did. His life was dangerous, even more so from the fact that he was undercover.

“Now, listen to me, Artie. This is very important.” Dorian waited until he had Artie’s full attention before he continued. “Very few people know that I’m undercover and if certain people were to find out, my life would be in danger.”

Dorian didn’t think Artie’s face could get any paler. He was wrong. “I won’t tell. When Jazz and that man questioned me, I didn’t say a word.”

“I know, baby.
